This excellent article from Comcast details an incident in which five women-- one of whom had just completed self-defense training-- successfully thwarted an attempted homicide. Horst Walk, a Bangor man, attempted to stab an unnamed woman who had a protective order against him. Five women observed the attempted assault and jumped in to stop it. Led by Husson University Student Jesse Hladik wrestled a knife out of Walk's hands and she and four other students wrestled him to the ground.
A bit frustrating that despite this successful bystander intervention Police Sgt. Paul Edwards still discourages people from getting involved. Gladly for Walk's intended victim, however, Hladik's training gave her the skills and confidence to keep herself and others safe.
